The 60’s was a great time and place for all types music, especially if your into guitars like I am. Hendrix with the help of his guitar package that consisted of an upside down strat electric guitar and Marshall guitar amplifier, brought us a sound we will never hear again.
Every band had their own great sound with the help of Gibson LP guitars, and Jazz style guitars, Fender strats, Telecasters along with their Precision and Jazz bass guitars. These instruments were used to create rock, blues, and country music.
One band that stood out in the 60’s was Sly and the Family Stone. They were the first integrated band with a clear cut message about blacks and whites getting along in the song “Everyday People”. This is the band that invented Funk, and their bass guitar player Larry Graham invented the slapping bass guitar style that is used when playing Funk music.
I have enjoyed playing bass guitar for over 40 years. While taking lessons and practicing are essential for playing guitar well, there is another factor that is overlooked in the learning curve.
There is a lot that can be said for being in a band, or even jamming with a different group of guitar players all the time. I remember when as a teenager I used to get together with quite a number of bands in the area just to jam. Besides the obvious advantages to your playing that comes with being in a band, you get to try other musicians electric guitar packages. We used to try each others guitars all the time, we would even step in behind the drums to try them.
When it came time for any of us to get our next guitar package, we had the advantage of knowing what we wanted, because we had already played it.
Are you an advanced guitar player, or maybe someone who is just starting out? No matter what your skill level electric guitar packages are something you need to know about.
When I started playing in the 60’s there was no Internet to keep me informed on what I needed to complete my bass guitar package. I was in my teens when I purchased my first bass guitar and it wasn’t until I got it home that I realized I needed a bass amplifier. After I got my amplifier and could hear what I was playing, I realized I need some kind of a tuner or in those days a pitch pipe.
I guess you see where I’m heading with this. Today everything is available in an electric guitar package, plus if you get the right package you will receive other things you will ultimately need also. So check out some guitar packages, you’ll find they come in a range of prices to cover any budget.
Have you heard the Doobie Brothers lately? I’m not just referring to the recorded songs you hear on the radio, I’m talking about some of their live music.
If you are not familiar with the Doobie Brothers they have been around since 1970 have to date sold over 300 million albums. While most of the band have been replaced through the years Tom Johnson and Pat Simmons have been with the band from the beginning (give or take a few years). Tom Johnson handles most of the lead vocals along with guitar, Pat Simmons is a good compliment to Tom on vocals as well as on guitar, John McFee has been on and off with the band since 1979 and is another good compliment to the guitar package of Tom and Pat also helps with the vocals. Skylark was added to the band in 1995 and is a great addition, his bass guitar style is effective yet simple. The bass guitar sound he provides rounds out their guitar package.
One particular song of theirs shows off their versatility, the name of the song is “Steamer Lane Breakdown”. While alot of their other songs are make use of electric guitars and vocals this one is a bluegrass instrumental, it features Tom playing rhythm on an acoustic guitar, Pat finger-picking on a acoustic guitar and John with some great work on a steel guitar.
Whether your looking for a new guitar as a beginner or intermediate player an acoustic guitar package may be just what your looking for. Sure you can buy an acoustic guitar or electric guitar seperately, but sooner or later you will find yourself back at the music store to purchase other accessories that you could have bought at the time you purchased your guitar and at a much less price.
What makes an acoustic guitar package so special is the versatility, If you bought an acoustic guitar with an equalizer that means it can be plugged into an amplifier if your playing a gig, or play it by itself as the sound will come out of the sound hole. Buying a package you will already have the amplifier for those times you need more power. A guitar package will also give you a gig bag and a stand. The gig bag can be for transporting you guitar to a gig, or just for storing it in your room, while the stand likewise can be used to hold your guitar while playing a gig inbetween sets, or at home if you don”t want to keep it your guitar set up ready to play instead of in a gig bag. A complete guitar package will also come with a guitar tuner, guitar strap, and guitar polish and rags.
I just finished reading a thought-provoking book by Malcolm Gladwell titled “Outliers: The Story of Success.” The idea behind the book was to investigate why certain individuals excel at various pursuits and industries while others flounder in mediocrity. It concludes that many of the most successful people have more than just raw talent in common – they also put in hours and hours of dedication to their craft.
The Beatles are presented as one case study supporting this theory. Before they became a breakout hit in Britain and swept across the Atlantic to perform on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” the Beatles were just a bar band doing tons of gigs in Germany. They spent so much time playing together and tightening their sound that they were light years ahead of many more experienced bands. Even if you as a fledgling guitar player aren’t aiming for fame and fortune, you can improve by leaps and bounds by putting some dedication into your custom acoustic guitar playing.
