Gibson SG
Gibson had signed an endorsement deal with Les Paul for what was and still is known as the Gibson Les Paul. When sales for the Les Paul electric guitar were down in 1961 Gibson decided to redesign the Les Paul, they made it slimmer and changed the design to a double cutaway.
Sales for the newly designed guitar were good but were done without Les Paul knowing about it, and when he did find out he asked Gibson to take his name off it as it was not the original guitar he ok’d. There are a few sides to the story but Gibson decided to rename the new guitar the Gibson SG the SG stands for “Solid Guitar”. There were a few of the SG guitars made with the Les Paul name on it but were discontinued in 1963.
The Gibson SG is the electric guitar you hear used when you listen to “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the guitar is also used by Angus Young of AC/DC, and Tony Iommi formally 0f Black Sabbath.
