Playing Chords

Joe Miranda April 4, 2010

Playing chords on your electric guitar is kind of like the meat and potatoes of playing guitar. Even if you play an acoustic guitar knowing how to play chords is the most important thing you will learn.

It doesn’t matter if you play lead guitar or rhythm guitar, you will playing chords with both, only playing more of them with rhythm. It is most important that your technique for playing chords is smooth.

When you are practicing there are a few things to be aware of, first you need to stay loose. Your fingers need to be as agile as they can be to play chords and their changes. Even when your not playing guitar exercise your fingers by either typing or using a stress ball. Your hand position should be perpendicular to the neck, and you should only be playing with your fingertips.

Playing chords on a guitar is not an easy thing to do, it takes a while to master it so don’t let frustration set in and beat you. One thing to remember, if it is that easy to do everyone would be a guitar player.

Don’t be too concerned with the speed of transitioning from one chord to another that will come with practice.
