Growing up in Queens which is a Borough in New York in the 50’s nd 60’s I was like every other boy in the neighborhood, playing stick-ball, softball, basketball, handball just to name a few activitie. I entered my teens around the time of the British invasion, thus being a big fan of The Beatles (as you can tell if you follow my blogs).
This was probably about the best time in Rock and Roll as the influence of The Beatles branched out to many other bands or the time and it was like an electic guitar war, and it really expanded the horizons of rock that made it what it is today. In Junior High School at the time my friends, my brother and I decided to form a band, but first we had to learn how to play. Each of us took an instrument, mine was the electric bass guitar. I took lessons and bought my first bass guitar and bass amplifier with money I made from my paper route.
Within a few years we started our band and had a decent sound. From there I went on to be in several bands one of which was a group of us from the dance band in school, it was a 9 piece band with a terrific sound.
I am now 57 years old soon to be 58, I no longer play any of the sports from my childhood but I still can play bass. As a parent I now pass this along to children, no matter what you do if you learn an instrument you will take that skill with you for life.
Did you ever purchase something just to find out you need something else to make it work properly? Like buying a hockey puck without a stick, or a hockey stick without a puck. How about purchasing an IPOD alone that didn’t come with ear buds or some other device to produce the sound.
The same thing applies to purchasing a guitar. Whether it be an electric guitar, or even an electric bass guitar, without an amplifier the results would be same you can practice for yourself with the guitar but it would be awfully hard to hear anything without a bass amplifier or guitar amplifier.
From a logic’s stand point it makes much more sense to purchase an electric guitar package or a bass guitar package. Your wallet will thank you for this also as it is less expensive to buy a bass or electric guitar package. Along with an amplifier you would receive a guitar tuner ( also a necessity ), your guitar isn’t any good if it is not in tune ( bet you didn’t even think about that one ),
You have already purchased a bass guitar package and have had it for a while. You’ve practiced everyday and have become fairly proficient at it and are ready to take the next step, however you’re not sure what wether to try another style of bass guitar, or get a bigger bass amplifier.
Why choose, consider the advantages of having both another style bass guitar, and another amplifier. With the right bass guitar package you can have both. As with electric guitars all bass guitars don’t play alike, or sound alike. Having another style bass guitar gives you the flexibility to experiment between the two when your playing a song, you might like the sound of one over the other, or the feel of one over the other.
When looking for another bass guitar package look for one with a different size amplifier than that of the one you already have. Again this gives you more flexibility, let’s say you already had a 10w bass amplifier and have now picked up a 20w amplifier, you can either play either bass guitar with either of the amps or you can treat one amp as a pre-amp. This is achieved by running one cable from your bass to the first amp (lets say the 10w bass amp), next you would run another cable from the headphones jack of the first amp to the input jack of the second amp. (by the way the second cable you get along with the 2nd bass package). Don’t be afraid to experiment with it that’s how the professionals get their sound.
When you’re performing with a band it’s important to understand a little bit about musical mechanics. It’s not as though you can simply get on stage and start singing/playing your instruments to a packed audience and expect them all to hear you. You’ll need a few pieces of equipment to get the show on the road – starting with a bass amp.
A bass amp is an amplifier which is used exclusively for an electric guitar and electric keyboard. Without a bass amplifier no one in the audience can hear what you’re playing on the keyboard or the bass. For people that don’t know much about music, it’s best explained like this: electric instruments need amplifiers to work while acoustic instruments do not. Though the industry standard would be an eight-by-ten bass cabinet, it would be wise to purchase a practice amp first, so that you can master your sound and sing.

While most people can name off several of their favorite guitarists with ease, most bass players are overlooked and stay confined to the shadows of the stage. In my opinion, this is a travesty. The bass is an integral component of all bands, particularly the standard four-piece ensemble that is the prototype of rock bands.
Perhaps this is why some of my favorite bands-Pink Floyd, RHCP, Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, etc.-don’t gloss over the importance of the bass. These bands are not afraid to turn up the bass amplifiers and let the oft overlooked player shine. The next time that you are listening to your favorite band, pay attention to the bass line and note how the song hinges on it and all of the other instruments follow its lead.
Everyone who plays an instrument at some time or another has wanted to sound like their favorite musician. Whether it’s someone playing an electric guitar or a bass guitar they all have the same thing in common, they are playing through a preamp.
A preamp is an amplifier plugged into another amplifier. Sometimes called a control amp, the purpose of a preamp is to prepare the signal played by your electric guitar for further amplification.
Although your favorite band uses equipment that is way to expensive for us to afford, you can achieve the same thing by plugging your guitar cable into one amplifier, then plug another cable from the headphones jack of the first amplifier to the input of another amplifier.
This will work with a two guitar amplifiers or two bass amplifiers.
If you are considering buying a bass guitar you might want to look into a bass guitar package. If you want more bang for your dollars spent bass guitar packages will give you everything you need as a beginner or intermediate player, they might even include some things you would not have thought of.
Electric bass Guitar packages include your bass guitar, in a style you prefer, a guitar cable, strap, and allen keys to make neck adjustments in the future should it be necessary. A package will also contain a guitar stand, gig bag, guitar tuner, and extras like guitar polish and guitar rags. Oh yeah, I almost forgot a 10 watt amplifier, or possibly a 20 watt bass amplifier.
